The idea for AIR BEAUTY came from seeing how difficult it was for both clients and beauty businesses to find each other. Most platforms focus on bookings, but the real challenge often happens before a booking is ever made. I realised there was a gap in the market for a platform focused on discovery rather than just bookings. AIR BEAUTY was created to help people easily find local beauty, wellness, fitness and self care businesses through categories, maps, and location based searches, while giving businesses a dedicated place to be discovered by people actively looking for their services.
Learning to Trust My Gut
Before AIR BEAUTY, I had owned and operated a clothing store, a café, and a beauty business, so I had plenty of business experience. What I didn’t have was any experience in technology. I quickly discovered there isn’t a lot of information available about how to launch an app, who to trust, or the best path to take when you’re starting from scratch.
My biggest lesson was learning to trust my gut. Early on, I was quoted anywhere from $200,000 to $500,000 to build the app, and some companies wanted investors involved. While that may work for some founders, I wanted to retain ownership and control of the platform. I also wanted to keep costs manageable so AIR BEAUTY could eventually be offered to the beauty community at a reasonable price.
I ended up partnering with a developer in New Zealand who had recently graduated and started his own company. His pricing was far more accessible, which made building AIR BEAUTY possible. That journey came with its own challenges because we were both learning along the way, but what stood out was his willingness to adapt, problem solve, and figure things out when obstacles arose. My background in graphic design also helped during the early stages because I could visually communicate exactly how I wanted the app to look and function.

The Moment I Almost Stopped
One of the biggest challenges came right at the beginning when I started getting quotes to build the app. Being quoted hundreds of thousands was incredibly confronting.
Finding a more affordable path forward was not easy, and there were definitely moments where I questioned whether it would be possible. Working with a newer developer meant there were challenges along the way and things sometimes took longer than expected while we figured out the best solutions.
What kept me going was the belief that the industry genuinely needed a platform like this. Every conversation with beauty business owners reinforced that belief. I focused on the long term vision and reminded myself that every obstacle was simply part of building something worthwhile.
